Hello there! Tõnis, also known as Disc Golf Fanatic, here with another insight into the disc golf world.
First things first! Happy PDGA ratings update day, September 10, 2024. With that, let’s celebrate because…
GANNON BUHR MAKES HISTORY!
By winning the DGPT+ event Discraft Great Lakes Open and cashing in a whopping $12,500, Gannon Buhr has set a new PDGA record for the most money ever earned in a single season at $125,638!
Wanna hear the crazy part?! There’s still 4 DGPT events left to play!
2024 DGPT schedule – https://discgolffanatic.com/2024-disc-golf-pro-tour-schedule/
In addition, all four of these events have substantial payouts. Here are the payouts from the last time they were DGPT events:
2022 GMC: $12,000;
2023 MVP: $18,000;
2023 USDGC: $30,000;
2023 DGPT Championship: $40,000.
Keep in mind that these are the payouts from previous years, and it’s highly likely that this year’s payouts will be even higher. All in all, there’s still at least a whopping $100,000 up for grabs for whoever wins it all!
Furthermore, there’s a good chance that Gannon Buhr will be the first player ever to earn over $150,000 in tournament prize money and might even surpass the $200,000 milestone in a single season.
TOP 10 Tournament Prize Money Earners in Disc Golf in 2024 – September update:

A MUST WATCH CLIP from JomezPro
Potentially one of the funniest clips of the 2024 season: Calvin Lonnquist accidentally picking up Calvin Heimburg’s disc at Great Lakes Open during round 2. Check it out here – https://www.instagram.com/p/C_oDw6iOPcf/
“Turf – The ultimate teeing surface.” Avery Jenkins
In the latest DiscGolfPark by Discmania blog post they state that the best surface for disc golf tees is artificial turf. Simple as that.
“Jenkins said that when it’s installed correctly, turf is disc golf’s “ultimate teeing surface,” and that players who don’t like turf tees likely just haven’t played on the right ones yet.”
FYI! DiscGolfPark by Discmania has built over 700 courses around the world. I think it’s pretty safe to say that they know what they are talking about!
Furthermore, they got Avery Jenkins in their team… “Jenkins is speaking from lots of experience. He’s a prolific disc golf course designer and former Pro Disc Golf World Champion who has played more disc golf courses than all but a handful of people. His current stats are over 1,500 disc golf courses played in 49 U.S. states and 23 countries.”
What if?! Eveliina Salonen could putt
I’m sure I am not the only one, who has thought… What if?! Eveliina could putt like an average DGPT FPO player? What if?! Eveliina could putt like the best DGPT FPO players?
According to DGPT stats Eveliina currently sits at 62.23% from C1X (43rd place out of 47) & C2 8.91% (39th out of 47).
All-in-all, she is not good at throwing the disc in the basket from circle one nor circle two, well below tour average.
Ready to ponder the question with me? Continue reading the article here – https://discgolffanatic.com/what-if-eveliina-salonen-could-putt/
Division 1 student-athlete made her debut on the DGPT!
Taylor Chocke, also known as ‘Disctay,’ is a former D1 track and field student-athlete and is now a Female Professional Open disc golf player. The remarkable part is that she made the cut and cashed in her first-ever DGPT event!
The FPO division better watch out…
Taylor’s rating saw a significant +18 increase with the latest (September) PDGA ratings update:
Chocek quickly became popular after showcasing her ability to throw backhands at over 70 mph and achieve distances of 450+ ft (137 m).
Here’s Chocek’s latest YouTube video about participating in her first DGPT event:
Comparing the Disc Golf Market
Once again Infinite Discs has published their site’s sales. Even though this is based only on their sales, this data gives a good glimpse into the sales and market shares of manufacturers and brands on the disc golf market.
From Infinite Discs blog:
- The biggest growth of the market share pie is the “Others” category. In 2018, disc golf brands outside of the top twelve represented only 6.5% of disc golf sales. This year, the others account for nearly 21% of our online sales.
- In 2018, the disc golf market was largely dominated by a few key players. Innova stood as the undisputed leader with a commanding 37.17% market share. Discmania was our #2 selling brand with 9.06% and Dynamic Discs slightly behind at 8.96% of brand market share. While Discraft held a significant 7.68%, they were no where close to Innova in terms of disc golf brand sales.
- However, fast forward to 2024, and the landscape has evolved significantly. Innova’s market share has almost halved to 19.80%, yet they maintain their position as the top disc golf brand. This decline suggests that while Innova remains a dominant force, their hold on market dominance has loosened, allowing for the rise of competitors and other new brands.
