🥏 Recap: 2024 USDGC & the Biggest FPO A-Tier

Hello there! Tõnis AKA Disc Golf Fanatic here with another insight into the disc golf world.

Let’s get right into it!

Quick TPWDGC & USDGC recap

2024 TPWDGC:

For the first time ever, Kristin Tattar wins the Throw Pink Women’s Disc Golf Championship with a commanding lead of 6 strokes, even after double-bogeying the final hole!

Tattar cashed in a whopping $13,000 for winning the XA-tier event, bringing her 2024 tournament earnings to $86,044!

After winning the event Tattar said in the interview: “I feel like myself again.”

This victory pretty much seals the deal on who should win the DGPT and PDGA FPO Player of the Year, right?!

Tattar’s 2024 season: 6 Elite Series/Major wins (incl. 1 Major), even after not playing for months due to injury Tattar finished #3 in the DGPT Points Standings.

Gannon Buhr’s HISTORIC season continues as he wins the United States Disc Golf Championship! He is now a 2-time USDGC Champion! 🏆🏆

Buhr has now won 2 Majors in 2024, a total of 7 Elite Series/Major wins, with an average finish of 4.3 and has earned a total of $176,432 in tournament prize money this season!

The final round of the USDGC was extremely thrilling. At first, it looked like a Gannon Buhr vs. Anthony Barela battle, but then Calvin Heimburg happened…

Calvin Heimburg shot a course-record 13-under par with a bogey during the final round of the 2024 USDGC! Heimburg finished tied for second place with Anthony Barela.

Storylines at the 2024 USDGC

Winless McBeth

An end of an era?! For the first time in 13 years, Paul McBeth goes WINLESS during a season.

Drew Gibson’s journey

Another exciting storyline at the 2024 USDGC came from Drew Gibson, who earned his spot in the event through the Monday Qualifying round. After four rounds of solid disc golf, Gibson ended up tied for 10th place with Paul McBeth, meaning both earned an automatic invitation to next year’s USDGC!

Both Gibson and McBeth also took home a hefty $1,750.

Nate Doss & Barry Shultz CASHED at the USDGC!

Doss finished tied for 38th, and Schultz tied for 53rd. Both cashed, earning $860 and $550, respectively.

Note 1: Barry Shultz is 54 years old! He is a 2-time World & 3-time USDGC Champion! In addition, he is a 5-time PDGA POTY winner and was inducted into the Disc Golf Hall of Fame in 2013.

Note 2: Nate Doss said it out loud that his only goal at the 2024 USDGC was to make cash and he made it!

15-year-old FPO disc golfer Iida Lehtomäki

Iida Lehtomäki from Finland just shot her first 1000+ rated round during the third round of TPWDGC!

This is Iida’s FIRST ever event in the USA. Although she won’t make the cut or cash at this event, that’s one incredible debut!

P.S. She has played a total of 29 events and won 21 of them—that’s a 72.4% win rate!

Duodecuple bogey aka par +12

Scott Conway carded a duodecuple bogey, also known as par +12, on hole 12 during round 1 of the USDGC…

Happens to the best of us!

From the current PDGA Disciplinary Actions list

Jonathan Ray, the former TD at the Masters at Bud Hill, who mismanaged $30K funds from the tournament from almost 200 disc golfers, has received a Class B offense, resulting in a 12-month suspension and 12-month probation for his actions.

Class B Offenses generally involve intentional subversion of the Rules of Play, dishonesty, theft, or cheating.

In addition, Eric Oakley has received a 12 Month Probation & JohnE McCray received 9 Month Probation, both Class C Offenses.

Class C Offenses generally involve instances where intent is difficult to prove, but there is an articulable and provable pattern of misbehavior.

JohnE McCray most probably received his 8 month probation due to the drama that unfolded at the 2024 Tom Selinske’s USA Masters, where he was playing in a playoff against Barry Schultz, who in JohnE’s eyes made a footfault yet the Official Marshal, Rebecca Duffy did not see the situation and all hell broke loose…

The Disc Golf Pro Tour Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina, October 17th – October 20th.

2024 DGPT Championship’s $300,000 total purse!

This year’s winners will take home $35,000 and all players will earn a minimum of $2,000 for qualifying!

Note: Last year the total payout was at $322,000. So a 7% decrease!

New format at the DGPT Championship

“The DGPT Championship will maintain the same basic format as in 2023, with four rounds of stroke play and competitors being awarded a starting stroke advantage based on DGPT World Standings. However, the field will not be cut after the first two rounds, and scores will not be reset at any point during the competition. This means that competitors will maintain their starting stroke advantage for the duration of the competition, and all players will complete all four rounds.” – Disc Golf Pro Tour.

Basically, the higher a player is on the points standings leaderboard, the greater their stroke advantage. For example, Gannon Buhr finished 1st in the points standings and will start with a -10 stroke advantage, while Simon Lizotte, who finished 20th, will have a -3 stroke advantage. Players in the last positions will start with 0 strokes gained, so they have a lot of catching up to do!

Here are your final MPO Point Standings and the starting stroke advantages for the 2024 Disc Golf Pro Tour Championship.
